1000 Songs (Facebook Group) 2007-2014
In 2007 I started a Facebook Group where I said I would write on one of my favourite songs every day for 1000 days. People could join the discussion or not: in 2007 it wasn't clear how Facebook was going to behave. As it turns out it took seven years to do it. The level of participation was phenomenal: old friendships were rekindled; new ones formed; and the odd hostility melted through the act of talking about popular music. In reality, I think popular music was a MacGuffin, the official plot device for 1000 Songs, but the real story, the reason we gathered online for seven years, was really about our personal lives: relationships, hopes and fears, resentments, curmudgeonly nostalgia, technology, children, parents, jobs, cities, and learning to get along with each other.
